International Day of the Midwife 2026: One Million More Midwives, One Healthier Future
On this International Day of the Midwife, the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) honors the dedicated professionals who serve as the foundation of maternal and newborn health in the UAE. This year’s global theme, "One Million More Midwives," underscores a critical mission: addressing the global shortage of 350,000 trained midwives—128,000 of whom are needed in Arab countries alone. Investing in this workforce is not just a healthcare necessity; it is a life-saving imperative that could prevent 4.3 million deaths annually worldwide.
The Heart of Maternal Health in the UAE
MOHAP is building a sustainable, world-class healthcare system in alignment with the National Strategy for Nursing and Midwifery - Roadmap for 2026. Our strategy focuses on:
- Empowering Emirati talent: Expanding specialized pathways for UAE citizens to join and lead in the midwifery profession through specialized academic programs.
- Excellence in care: Elevating the standards of prenatal and postnatal services in healthcare facilities across the UAE.
- Leadership and Governance: Establishing the UAE as a regional hub for midwifery leadership in collaboration with global partners like the WHO.
Innovation through Research: the Nebras Program
This year is particularly significant as the Nebras Midwifery Research Program delivers its first milestones. By integrating evidence-based practices into clinical care, our midwives are evolving into scientists and innovators, ensuring every mother and child in the Emirates benefits from the most advanced care, data-driven care possible.
Why Midwives Matter
Beyond clinical expertise, midwives offer emotional support, education, and continuity of care. They are instrumental in:
- Reducing Maternal and Neonatal Mortality by providing expert care during the "golden hour" of birth.
- Promoting sustainable health by supporting breastfeeding and natural birth options.
- Building community health and trust by acting as a bridge between families and the broader healthcare system.
