The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHA), in cooperation with the Dubai Courts, has organized a mobile clinic to help people quit smoking as part of the "I quit .... now it's your turn" initiative under the national anti-smoking program. The activity was launched in the presence of Dr. Wedad Al Maidoor, Director of Primary Health Care Department and Director of National Tobacco Control Program, Corporate Communications officials from Dubai courts along with a number of customers.
Dr. Hussein Abdel-Rahman Al Rand, Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry's Health & Prevention Assistant Sector - Health Centers and Clinics, mentioned that the Ministry developed the mobile clinic as part of the organizational efforts in collaboration with Dubai Courts. He added that falls in line with the initiatives and campaigns to reach a wider demographic in order to better raise awareness on the dangers of smoking, which kills six million people every year. This is part of strategy to promote healthy lifestyle choices among the UAE citizens and reduce the prevalence of associated diseases.
He pointed out that the national agenda for the UAE Vision 2021 allocated a national indicator to assess the prevalence of smoking of any tobacco product by measuring the percentage of cigarettes and tobacco products being consumed daily by members of society across various age groups. It aims to reduce the rate among men from 21.6 per cent, as recorded in 2010 to 15.7 per cent by 2021. He noted that the Ministry aims to open four new clinics for smoking rehabilitation, in Masla health center in Kalba, Al Rifa'a Health Center, Al Gharayen Health Center in Sharjah, and in Ras Al Khaimah. Dr. Hussein Abdel-Rahman Al Rand encouraged all those who want to quit smoking to avail of the services being offered by primary health care centers or the mobile clinic.
Dr. Wedad Al Maidoor said, "The mobile clinic will provide health counseling services and support to quit smoking, in order to raise awareness among the society. It will also conduct basic preliminary health screening taking into account height, weight and blood sugar, in addition to an examination of the lung functions and amount of carbon monoxide, it will also examine blood pressure and body mass. The mobile clinic aims to help people identify potential health problems as soon as possible and will be providing comprehensive consultation and lectures on the dangers of smoking different kinds of tobacco, as well as distribute educational leaflets on ways how to quit."
Dr. Wedad explained that the launch of the mobile clinic falls in line with the strategic framework of the national anti-smoking program, which aims to reach smokers in their workplaces, and not just fixed in clinics. She pointed out that the Ministry is regularly contacted by people who want to quit smoking and that their statements have been recorded and handled confidentially as part of the integrated treatment program. This program aims to help people quit smoking in all its forms and provide appropriate treatments, as they are continuously monitored and followed up with regards to their progress. The clinic provides free detection and screening necessary for citizens and residents, well as treatments that begin with nicotine patches, capsule medication and awareness counseling.
