UAE Health authorities showcase latest developments of National Program for Donation and Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues "Hayat".
The UAE Health Authorities have showcased the latest developments of the National Program for Donation and Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues, "Hayat," at Arab Health 2024, taking place at the Dubai World Trade Centre from January 29 to February 1.
The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP), in collaboration with the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) and the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), are taking part in the event under a unified platform dubbed "Emirates Health."
Through their participation in the event, the UAE Health Authorities seek to promote the culture of organ donation both during life and posthumously, by unifying national efforts to save the lives of patients with organ failure, ease the burden on families, and improve the quality of life for patients.
Joint national efforts
HE Abdullah Ahli, Acting Assistant Undersecretary for the Support Services Sector, highlighted that the concerted national efforts to promote organ donation are making significant strides. Underpinned by a strategic vision, specialized programs, and the engagement of global experts, these efforts have significantly advanced the UAE’s standing in this crucial medical and humanitarian arena. This progress contributes not only to alleviating patient suffering and saving lives but also to reducing hospital burdens, cutting down treatment costs, and reallocating resources towards preventive and developmental programs.”
HE Ahli further noted that promoting the “Hayat” organ donation and transplantation program at Arab Health is a strategic move, especially as the conference provides an ideal platform to raise awareness about the program’s values and goals, capitalizing on the presence of thousands of visitors and exhibitors.
HE lauded the Ministry's proactive involvement in various exhibitions and events and its keenness to highlight the program’s benefits and share inspiring stories of patients who have found renewed hope after successful transplant surgeries. Such commitment is instrumental in increasing the number of registered donors, especially in the context of the UAE's rapidly evolving healthcare infrastructure and its appeal to international medical expertise.
"Hayat" supports health excellence
Dr. Ali Abdulkarim Al Obaidli, Chairman of the National Committee for Organ Transplantation, highlighted the humanitarian impact of "Hayat" program, citing its status as the world's fastest-growing organ donation initiative. With an impressive growth rate of 41.7% over the last five years, as reported at the Congress of the International Society for Organ Donation and Procurement (ISODP), the program’s growth accelerated to 56% in 2023 compared to 2022.
“This achievement, coupled with global recognition, is a testament to the unwavering support from the UAE's leadership and the collaborative efforts of health authorities in promoting organ donation. The program reaffirms the profound significance of this life-saving act, which offers renewed hope, alleviates family burdens, and enhances the quality of life for many.”
Al Obaidli added: “The National Program for Donation and Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissue - 'Hayat', stands as a pivotal milestone in the UAE's pursuit of healthcare excellence. It epitomizes our ambitions and relentless achievements, radiating with optimism and hope. The UAE is experiencing a rapid and comprehensive transformation in the medical field, from developing specialized medical personnel and adopting cutting-edge technologies to pioneering advanced methods, work tools, and providing a distinctive treatment environment.”
The UAE health authorities urge all community members to join in the life-saving initiative by registering with the National Program for Donation and Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues, "Hayat". This opportunity is open to all UAE residents aged 18 and above, offering them a chance to pledge their organ donation after clinical death.
Organ transplantation represents a lasting and effective remedy for numerous patients suffering from organ failure. Impressively, a single donor has the potential to rescue up to eight lives, demonstrating the profound impact one individual can have in addressing the critical need for organs. This act of generosity not only saves lives but also reinforces the spirit of community solidarity and compassion within the UAE.
