
H.E. Dr. Mohammed Salim Al Olama, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health and Prevention, emphasised that the International Day of the Midwife, observed annually on May 5, is a global occasion supported by national efforts to reinforce the role of midwives as a fundamental pillar in maternal healthcare, covering pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum care.
He highlighted the importance of empowering midwives and enhancing their professional standing through continuous training, skill development and improvement of the working environment, in line with the UAE’s strategic vision toward sustaining a healthcare system that meets the highest international standards.
UAE: A pioneer in advancing midwifery
H.E. Dr. Mohammed Al Olama emphasized that skilled midwives play a crucial role in reducing maternal mortality rates through their exceptional performance within the integrated maternal healthcare system. They constitute a core pillar of this system, aligned with national efforts to fulfil the objectives of the National Strategy for Nursing and Midwifery, an initiative launched by the UAE as a pioneering model through 2026. The strategy aims to advance professional practices and enhance the national appeal of the profession, thereby supporting health promotion and improving the quality of life in the country.

He added: "The Ministry is committed to empowering midwives to contribute to health transformation by encouraging them to invest in skills development, learning, research and innovation. We extend our thanks to them each year and reaffirm our commitment to strengthening their participation in shaping national health policies and contributing to the achievement of sustainable development goals.
