H.E. Al Owais: Emirati women are partners in shaping the future and driving positive transformation across development sectors

Celebrating Emirati Women’s Day under the theme ‘Hand in Hand, We Celebrate 50 Years’ represents a defining milestone in the UAE’s journey of women’s empowerment. The occasion reflects our pride in Emirati women, who across decades have demonstrated resilience and played a vital role in shaping the nation’s progress.

It is also a tribute to their sustained achievements as indispensable partners in the national journey of development, enriching prosperity through their diverse contributions and reflecting the very spirit of innovation and creativity.

Women as partners in shaping the future

Since the founding of the Union, the UAE’s wise leadership has upheld the conviction that empowering women is a national duty, recognising them as indispensable partners in nation-building and in shaping a prosperous future. This vision has flourished under the unlimited support of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the Mother of the Nation, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union (GWU), President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation (FDF).

Her Highness laid the strong foundations for women’s comprehensive empowerment, enabling Emirati women to rise to the highest leadership roles, take on decision-making responsibilities, and remain at the heart of the UAE’s progress and future aspirations.

Over the past five decades, this vision has become firmly rooted as a national priority, embedded across all sectors of public life. A comprehensive national strategy has further strengthened women’s leadership, particularly in parliamentary participation.

Since 2019, with the start of the 17th legislative term of the Federal National Council, Emirati women have held half of the Council’s seats, following Presidential Resolution No. (1) of 2019 issued by the UAE President, which guaranteed that women’s representation in the Council would not fall below 50 percent.

A theme aligned with the Year of Community

This year’s theme embodies the reality that Emirati women move forward with confidence, standing shoulder to shoulder with their brothers in carrying forward a legacy of sacrifice and dedication in service of the UAE and its people. The celebration also coincides with the designation of 2025 as the “Year of Community.”

On this occasion, we extend our best wishes to every Emirati woman for continued success, progress, and leadership across all fields, locally, regionally, and globally.
