Ministry of Health updates school health services at start of Academic Year 2015 - 2016
UAE, September 05, 2015 – In line with its commitment to ensure the health of students at all times, the Ministry of Health’s Department of Primary Care Health represented by the School Health Department reviewed and updated some of the health services offered to academic institutions during the start of Academic Year 2015-2016.
The review involved evaluating the deployment of:
- Stationing nurses in school clinics
- Examining health files and forms
- Updating the preventive examination guide for students
- Encouraging adoption of a health education guide for students
Since mid-August, the Ministry has already stationed 104 nurses in school clinics to address the current shortage. Another batch of nurses will be sent to schools in mid-September to increase the number of qualified nursing teams in public academic institutions. At the beginning of the new academic year, it also launched new student health files in line with the latest comprehensive preventive examination guide and the anti-obesity program.
The Ministry also reviewed and updated the consent forms, which are sent to parents to get their permission for medical intervention by school clinics or health centers. The School Health Department has already formed relevant committees to review the yearly comprehensive preventive examination guide for early detection of diseases and health problems in school communities. The guide has been updated in accordance with the best global practices and recommendations.
A series of introductory workshops for the nursing staff and doctors working in schools and primary health care centers will be held starting next week. During the workshops, the participants will be trained on proper application of the new comprehensive preventive examination guide, which was adopted along with health education guide. It will be formally launched by the end of September. Schools nurses will be trained to conduct tutorials as well to raise health awareness among students and encourage them to practice healthy lifestyles. The lectures will be done according to the students’ level.
The school health services on school safety and canteen cleanliness have been implemented in coordination with the Ministry of Education and are offered to improve students’ physical and mental health.
