Union Pledge Day

Commemorating the foundation of the Union

The Union Pledge Day, observed annually on July 18, commemorates the historic moment in 1971 when the country’s Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and the Rulers of the Emirates signed the declaration of the Union and the UAE Constitution while announcing the official name of the United Arab Emirates. It eventually led to the official establishment of the nation on December 2, 1971.

“Today, we celebrate and immortalize this momentous occasion in the nation's memory and the hearts of its people. Union Pledge Day embodies the values of unity, solidarity, and cohesion among the people of the UAE.”

- HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE

Significance of the occasion

The Union Pledge Day reinforces the principles that continue to shape the country's identity and aspirations. It aims to:

  • Preserve national values established by Sheikh Zayed and the Founding Rulers, including unity, leadership, and service.
  • Raise awareness among youth about the UAE’s founding history, its challenges, and the achievements of its early leaders.
  • Honor the sacrifices and efforts that led to the unification of the emirates.
  • Strengthen national identity and pride in the UAE’s journey and vision.
  • Encourage loyalty and belonging among citizens and residents.
  • Support the country’s forward-looking vision as it continues to evolve into a more inclusive, advanced, and prosperous nation.
